Be it known that l. Gnonon V. (nurnnm a citizen of the llnited States. residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates locking mechanism for chines.

To prevent bending the bell-crank arm 41. due to its lightness. at the depression of a type key 15. the effective end of said arm moves in a slot -42 (l igures and 11) formed in a bracket 44 and is supported thereby.
The shift fram 23 at the rearthereof includes a vertical plate having the-rein an opening 45 through which the slide 35 extends into a position for its arm 43 to operate the key-locking device or bell-crank lever 39. The slide 3.? is guided upon this rear vertical plate of the shift frame 23 by means of a screw ltj'passing through a slot 46 in the slide 255. as shown in Figures 1. 2 and 3.

For lightness and simplicity of structure. the bell 48 (Figures 1. 2. 3 and (5 to 10. in clusivc) is directly attached to the left marginal stop 30 by a bracket 4!) and is struck by a bell-ciapper 50 mounted on the end of a wire spring 51 fast to the lever 33 near its fulcrum 34 (Figure '3). To unlock the keys l5 and the carriage 20 when arrested by the left marginal stop 30 so that typing may be performed beyond the end of the line. as determined by this margiual stop. the lever 33. which is mounted at the rear of the carriage. is provided with a key (it). (Figures 1. 2. 3 and 9). which. when depressed. raises the left end of the lever above the projection 32 of the left marginal stop. seen in Figure 11 This permits a spring (51 (Figures 2, 3. 9 and 11) anchored to the shift fram :23 and attached to the sliding link 35 to retract the latter and there with the bar 31. so as to move said projection out of engaging relation with the lever 3-; and to permit a spring (32 (Figures 1. :2 and 11) to return the bcll t'rank 39 to its ineffective position. thus unlocking the type keys and the carriage.
At the completion of a line of writing. the carriage 20 may be returned to the beginning of a'ncw line. and is arrested in its movement by the left end of the lever 33 engaging a right marginal stop (35 (Figures 1. 2. 3. 4 and 9) also adjustable at letter-space. intervals on the slidable bar 31 at the rear of of the shift frame. \Yhcn the carriage is thus returned. the bar 31 and link 35 connccted therewith are returned by their spring 61 to normal position. and the arm 41 of the bell-crank 39 is returned to its normal ineffective position by its spring 62 from underneath the universal bar 21. thereby unlocking the type keys.
To adjust the marginal stops 30 and (35 along the bar 31. each stop is provided with a finger-piece 66 integrally formed with a C-shaped transversely movable dog member or slide (37. which has integrally formed thereon. a pawl or dog (38 (Figure 7'). which normally engages teeth 69. formed on the bar 3]. When the linger-piece 66 is depressed against the power of a spring 70. the slide is moved downwardly to disengage the pawl 6H from the teeth of the bar 31. to permit the marginal stops to be moved along Said bar to any desired position. The slides (ii' are guided on the marginal stops by guides 71. integrally formed with the marginal stops. It will be noted that the marginal stops may be moved inwardly, or towards each other, without depressing the. fingeriece 136. the pawl 68 snapping over the teeth on of the bar 31. but the spring To is strong enough to hold said stops against accidental displacement inwardly. The marginal stops are, however. positively held from being moved outwardly by the pawl 68 abutting against one of the teeth 69.
The marginal stops 30, and their slides (37 are preferably formed of sheet-metal and thereby simplicity and economy are attained.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a typewriting machine, the combination with type-keys and a traveling carriage, of marginal stops for arresting said carriage at the beginning and at the end of a line, a case-shift frame on which said carriage travels to be shifted thereby, a slidable member on said shift frame to shift therewith and on which said marginal stops are mounted, and a device mounted upon the frame of the machine for locking said keys at the end of said line, said key-locking device being operable by said slidable member for locking said keys in any case-position of said shift. frame.
2. In a typewriting machine. the combination with type keys, of a traveling carriage, a marginal stop for arresting said carriage at the end of its travel, a case-shift frame on which. said carriage travels, a slidable member for said marginal stop mounted on said case-shift frame, a universal bar underlying said keys and actuable at the depression of said keys, and a lever mounted on the framework of the machine and operable by said slidable member at any position of said case-shift frame and co-operating with said universal bar for locking said keys at the end of the carriage travel in any posi tion of said carriage.
3. In a tvpewriting machine of the class described, the combination of a case-shift frame. a carriage frame on said shift frame and having a platen and comprising a rear bar behind the platen. a lever .pivoted upon said rear bar and extending thercalong and provided with a key. a rack mounted upon said shift frame in proximity to said lever, and margin-controlling devices independently adjustable along said rack and each having means cngagcable by said lever to lock the carriage so as to control the extent of margin, said levcr operable to disengage said means for unlocking the carriage.

In a typewriting machine of the class described, the combination of a case-shift frame. a carriage frame on said shift frame and having a platcn and comprising a rear bar behind the platen, a lever pivoted upon said rear bar and extending therealong and provided with a key. a rack mounted upon said shift frame in proximity to said lever, and margin-controlling devices independently adjustable along said rack and each havin means engageable by said lever to lock t e carriage so as to control the extent of margin. said lever operable to disengage said means for unlocking the carriage. one of said margin-controlling devices carrying a bell arranged between said rack and said shift frame.

In a typewriting machine of the class described. the combination of a case'shift frame, a carriage frame on said shift frame and having a platen and comprising a rear bar behind the platen. a lever pivoted upon said rear bar and extending therealong and provided with a key, a rack mounted upon said shift frame in proximity to said lever, inarginwontrolling devices independently adjustable along said rack and each having means engagcablc by said lever to lock the carriage so as to control the extent of margin. said lever o )erable to disengage said means for unloclv'ing the carriage. said rack movable endwisc by said carriage and lever. a slide attached to said rack and extending downwardly, means upon said shift frame to uide said slide. said slide having a downwardly projecting arm, and a keydocking lever in the path of said arm; said arm being of sufficient length to accommodate the shifting movement of said shift frame.

The combination of a carriage. a shift frame together with which the carriage is shiftable up and down to different case positions. a rack, a margin-controlling device upon said rack. said rack movable endwise by said carriage, a slide attached to said rack and extending downwardly, means upon said shift frame to guide said slide, said slide having a downwardly projecting arm. a her-locking lever in the path of said arm: said arm being of sufficient length to accommmlatc the shifting movement of said shift frame. and a spring connected to said slide to retain it to normal position together with said rack. w
7. in a typewriting machine of the class described. the combination of a case-shift frame, a carriage frame on said shift frame and having a platcni a rack mounted upon said shift frame. a lever on said carriage frame. margin-controlling devices independently adjustable alon said rack and eagh having means engageable by said lever to control the extent of margin. said rack movable endwise by said carriage and lever. a slide attached to said rack and extending downwardly. means upon said shift frame to guide said slide. said slide having a downwardly projecting arm. and a kc \'-locl ing lever in the path of said arm: said arm being of suflicientlength to accommodate the shifting movement of said shift frame; said shift frame comprising a vertical plate and having an opening through which said slide extends to position to operate said key-looking lever.

The combination of a carriage. a shift frame together with which the carriage is shiftable up and down to different case position a rack. a margin-control]ing device upon said rack. a lever on said carriage. said rack movable endwise by said carriage and lever. a slide attached to said rack and extending downwardly. means upon said shift frame to guide said slide. said slide having a downwardly projecting arm. and a keylocking lever in the path of said arm; said arm being of sufficient length to accommodate the shifting movement of said shift frame.

The combination of a case-shift frame, a carriage thereon. a margin gage to cooperate with said carriage, a. slide controlled by said margin age. an arm con nected to said slide, and a key-locking mechanism mounted on the framework of the machine and including a part in the path of said arm. whereby the actuation of the slide by the carriage operates through said arm.

The combination of a frame shiftable to different case positions. a carriage traveling on said frame, a letter-spacing universal bar operable by the type keys. a normally ineffective lock for said universal bar. said lock and said universal bar mounted upon the stationary framework of the machine. and an arm carried by said shift frame to engage said lock. and operable by said carriage to move said lock to effective position, said arm lengthened to accommodate the caseshifting movement of said frame.

and an arm moving with said shiftable frame and connected to said rack to engage said lock to move it to effective position. said arm lengthened to accommodate the case-shifting movements of said frame.

In a typewriting machine having typekeys, the combination of a case-shift frame. a carriage mounted to travel on said frame, a slide mounted for endwise movement on the case-shift frame. a margin-gage on the slide to co-operate with the carriage. an operating member connected with said slide to move therewith. and a key-locking mechanism mounted on the framework of the machine and including a part in the path of said member, whereby the actuation of the slide by the carriage operates through said member to lock the typo-keys, said member having a sliding engagement with said part to accommodate the caseshifting movements of said frame.

In a front-strike ty 'iewriting machine having type-keys. the combination of a caseshift frame mounted to shift up and down. a carriage mounted to travel on said frame. a margin-gage device to compel-ate with the carriage. an operating member on the caseshift frame operable b said margin-gage device, and a key-locking mechanism mount ed on the stationary framework of the machine and including a part in the path of said operating member, whereby the actuation of the margin-gage device by the carriage operates through said operating member to lock the type-keys, said operating member having vertical sliding relationship with said part to accommodate the caseshifting movements of said frame.
