Abstract
188,086. Chapman, H. Aug. 10, 1921. Sparking-plugs.-Inspection devices of the kind described in Specification 158,749 for observing the working conditions in an engine cylinder are combined with a cock for closing the communicating passage leading to the device and to a passage opening into the atmosphere. As shown in Fig. 1, a reflecting surface 11 is mounted above a lens 5 between which and' the engine cylinder is a cock 3 for cutting out the inspection device. The cock also controls a compression relief orifice 12. A modified construction is described in which the lens 5 is replaced by a reflecting prism and the cock controls an additional orifice through which air may be discharged for scavenging the passage leading to the combustion space. Alternatively, the prism may be mounted above the lens. A further modification is described in which the inspection device is formed in an adapter carrying a sparking-plug the terminals of which may be inspected as well as the working conditions in the cylinder. Cooling fins may be provided on the device shown in Fig. 1, or on the device formed with the adapter for a sparking-plug. Figs. 4 and 5 show the constructions of reflecting surfaces with which the inspecting devices may be fitted. As shown in Fig. 4, a cylinder of glass &c. is cut away at 16 only or at 16, 17 and formed with a collar 15 for securing purposes. The construction shown in Fig. 5 comprises two arms at right-angles with a flat or curved preferably silvered surface 16 and a convex surface at 17A through which the observer looks.
