Abstract
188,056. Thatcher, C. J. July 29, 1921. Paramido-phenol, obtaining; cells; diaphragms; electrodes; supporting; electrolytes, agitating.-A hollow electrode 12 surrounded closely by a diaphragm 11, as shown, or by another electrode is perforated at the top and bottom and contains a stirrer 33 to produce a uni-directional flow of the electrolyte downwards through the electrode 12 and upwards outside it. The stirrer is preferably situated beneath a false bottom 31 having an opening for the stirrer shaft 30 and another opening, not shown, to permit insertion of a tube for removal of the finished charge; these openings are connected to the edge by a slit to allow passage of the arms 33. The electrode 12 may be of lead or may consist of four graphite plates secured together at the top by angle-pieces 13 and bolts 14. The lower edges of the plates fit in grooves in the bottom of the diaphragm vessel 11, which is itself supported by three feet or blocks 11<a>. The electrode 12 is spaced from the top of the vessel 11 by blocks 17. The intervening space may be covered by glass plates 20. The vessel 11 is preferably of a granular material known as " filtros " impregnated with sodium silicate. The outer electrodeconsists of lead plates 18 hung over a frame supported by the porcelain container 10. The electrode 12 is covered by glass plates 22 positioned between guide strips 25 and lugs on a central lead plate 23 provided with an opening for the stirrer shaft and another for the withdrawal of electrolyte. The stirrer shaft 30, which is preferably of glass, is provided at the top with a metal sleeve 50 on a collar 51 and a driving pulley 54. The sleeve 50 is mounted in a bearing sleeve 52 clamped between the two halves of a divided beam 45; the beam 45 is secured to beams 43 mounted on uprights 40 secured around the outside of the container 10 by wires 41 tightened by screw bolts, not shown. The arms 33 and the shaft 30 may be hollow, and the latter provided with an aperture 37. The cell may be employed for the production of paramido-phenol, the vessel 11, which forms the cathode chamber, being charged with a mixture of nitro benzol and sulphuric acid, and the outer container 10 with sulphuric acid.
