Abstract
140,563. Harris, J. Feb. 21, 1919. Cells; diaphragms; electrodes; supporting; connexions; oxygen and hydrogen, obtaining.-Electrodes 6 are situated within openings in the sides of gas-collecting casings 4 and are spaced from the edges of the openings. The openings may be covered by diaphragms 7. As shown, the casings 4, which may be of cast iron or fibre, are supported by rabbeted insulating-bars 3 along opposite sides of the bottom of a tank 1. Each casing 4 is open below and closed at its upper end. Around the opening in each side of the casing is a flange 5, from which the electrode 6 is spaced by insulating-lugs. Fitting over the flanges of adjacent casings is a ring 8 perforated at its upper part to allow free escape of any gas which may be forced through the diaphragms by abnormal pressure. The edges of the diaphragms are clamped between the rings 8 and flanges 5. The electrodes 6, which, like the openings, may be of oval form. are provided on their operative faces with rounded bosses 6<a> arranged at different levels in adjacent vertical rows. The two electrodes in each casing are connected by a bar 14 to a conductor 13 which passes through an insulating- stopper 4b in the top of the casing. A gas exit is provided in each casing. A screw 10 and plate 11 clamp the series of casing and rings 8 together. The end openings of the series may be covered by caps 12. As electrolyte, a ten per cent solution of caustic soda may be used.
