Abstract

Current detectors; current - direction indicators; magnetic tests.-A device for detecting electric currents, applicable as a short-circuit detector for wiring systems such as lighting and starter systems on automobiles and the like of the type in which a movable magnet is controlled by a sbationary permanent magnet, comprises a case 1, a moving magnet 2 carrying an indicating hand 5 co-operating with a, scale 6 on the case, and a stationary magnet 4 within the case, the case being adapted to carry one or more additional stationary magnets to increase the control for use with systems of high voltage, such as starter systems. The, hand 5 is normally held by the magnet 4 at the zero of the scale 6 and is deflected when the device is brought near a current-carrying conductor to an extent and in a direction dependent respectively on the strength and direction of the current. The magnet 4 is preferably semi-circular, tha magnet 2 being pivoted between its poles. The additional control magnets 8 may be semi-circular and may be mounted within rings 7 fitting around the circular case 1.
