Abstract

1530479 Control systems for electro-static precipitators WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 3 Dec 1976 [18 Dec 1975] 51883/75 Heading H2H A method of sensing a flashover in electrical apparatus 10 such as an electrostatic precipitator comprises sensing the current passed by a control circuit 16 in selected half cycles of an A.C. supply, comparing the current in a selected half-cycle with the current in a chosen preceding half-cycle or with a weighted average of currents in chosen preceding half-cycles whereby a flashover is sensed if the comparison indicates that the current in the latest half-cycle is greater than the current in the chosen preceding half-cycle or the weighted average of currents in chosen preceding half-cycles. An A.C. supply 14 is connected to the precipitator via a transformer/rectifier unit 12 and the control circuit 16 which includes a pair of inverse-parallel connected thyristors. The current supplied to the precipitator is sensed by a transformer or Hall-effect device 18 and fed to a monitor 20. A current comparator 24 compares the output of the monitor 20 with the output of a weighting and average circuit 26 connected to a store 22. If a flashover occurs, the resultant increased current in the following half-cycle is detected by the comparator which retards the firing point or switches off the thyristors in the circuit 16 and operates an alarm and/or indicator 40.
