Abstract
185,613. Achurch, F. Aug. 17, 1921. Motor-cycles, tricars, and the like; compound road vehicles.-A goods-carrier comprises a twowheeled unit attached to the frame of a motorbicycle in place of the rear wheel, the wheels of the unit being driven through free-wheel gearing and a countershaft mounted in the bicycle rear fork. A rectangular framework, Figs. 1 and 2, carries bearings for the axle i and the front transverse member c<1> is formed with a central section consisting of upper and lower flat metal bars between which the bicycle chain stays k are located. Intermediate longitudinal members l having bearings for the axle i are connected at their rear ends to the transverse member d and at their front ends are flattened and slotted so that they may be clamped to the bicycle rear fork m by the shaft upon which the tubular chain-driven counter-shaft q is journaled. The bicycle fork m is further supported by stays v from lower longitudinal U-shaped frame members t, the forward ends of which are clamped to the chain stays k. To ensure lateral rigidity, telescopic stays 3, 5 are provided. The outer longitudinal members are stiffened by ties 7. In the free-wheel driving-mechanism for the wheels, Figs. 7 and 8, the driving-discs 16 secured to the axle i carry sliding pawls 19 of square section with inclined ends which co-operate with ratchet teeth 18 on the road wheels. The pawls are pressed towards the ratchet teeth by springs 20.
