Abstract

138,682. Brooks, C. I. Jan. 25, 1919. Side-cars.-In motor-tricycles of the kind in which a motor-bicycle is combined with a twowheeled unit having a two-seated, body, the axle of the two rear driving-wheels of the unit is attached to the bicycle back forks in place of the rear wheel and the body is made of U-shape in plan, the two points of the U extending towards the front of the bicycle and on each side thereof, so that the passengers sit on either side of the driver. A tricycle may be constructed permanently on these lines instead of being convertible into a bicycle. The two wheels of the unit are mounted on opposite ends of a two-part axle casing 8 of the usual motor-car pattern, and are rotated by freewheel or other gearing from a rotating axle contained in the casing and driven from the engine or change-gear by a chain 12. The axle casing is provided with brackets, by means of which it is secured to the rear forks 15 of the motor-bicycle, and an additional stay 19 between the upper part of the axle casing and the bicycle prevents rotation of the casing. The axle is further constrained by radius rods 25, 26 connected at their forward end to the bottom tube of the bicycle frame. A transverse spring 36 and cantilever side springs 42, 42 carry the body, which is provided with a seat extending right across or divided at the centre. The two forward extensions 2 of the body are connected to the steering-head of the bicycle by links 45, 46, while the body and axle are further connected by links 48, 51.
