Abstract

Pyrotechnic apparatus and compositions.-Relates to the production of coloured smoke by the. combustion of a composition containing a combustible, a comburent, and a vaporizable colouring-dye, and consists mainly in arranging the composition C in a heat-insulated casing A provided with one or more outlet holes a<2> so proportioned and designed that the dye is vaporized without decomposition. A fuze D and a priming-charge F are provided for igniting the composition. The casing may be attached to or hung from a parachute or other support with its outlet or outlets at the bottom, as shown in Fig. 1, or at the side, as shown in Fig. 3, wires such as G, G<1>, G<2> being provided for this purpose. The combustible used is preferably sugar or flour in preference to the previously proposed shellac or lactose; potassium chlorate is used as comburent; and the following dyes are mentioned, namely, auramine, oil yellow, purple dye No. 80260, and blue. dye No. 80073. Sodium bicarbonate may be added to prevent any tendency to inflammation. The ingredients may be mixed with water or alcohol to obtain a tough dough, which can be rolled into sheets, then cut into pellets.
