Abstract

685,234. Engine - starter cartridges. ROTAX, Ltd. July 12, 1951 [Aug. 4, 1950], No. 19495/50. Class 9(i) An engine-starting cartridge has a case a with a hollow head b surrounding metal tubes c through which the gases from the propellant d are discharged. The space surrounding the tubes is filled with water, to which substances may be added to lower the freezing point. The outer ends of the tubes are closed by a metal disc e held in position by an annular cover f and a central screw g. The disc e is blown off when the charge is ignited. A fusible plug or plugs h close the region containing the water until melted by the hot gases. The water on release is converted into steam and mixing with the gases lowers their temperature to prevent damage to engine parts such as turbine blades. In an alternative construction an annular water chamber surrounds the propellant chamber.
