Abstract
130,384. Vickers, Ltd., and Johnson, F. G. L. Feb. 9, 1918. Projectile fuses. - Consists in a timefuse so constructed as to be maintained gas-tight throughout the combustion of the fuse composition during the flight of the shell. In the construction shown, a plug B screwed into one end of the fuse-body A, the other end of which is solid, carries a column b of slow-burning composition, across the outer end of which lies a transverse column b<1> of similar composition or of quick-burning powder. The composition b is ignited on discharge by the flash produced by the set-back of a pellet C, which carries a cap D and is normally secured by shearing-lugs c, the cap coacting with an anvil F. The air space within the fuse-body A is large enough to prevent undue pressure arising. A device may be provided to vary the effective length of the fuse-column.
