Abstract

184,474. Neighbour, A. G. L. Aug. 9, 1922. Magneto-electric machines. - A multi-spark magneto is provided with a body casting with magnets and pole-pieces fixed therein and with a timing sleeve detachably fitting the body casting and supporting all the operative parts. Figs. 1 and 7 show a timing sleeve 20 rotatably mounted in the housing 12, carrying pole-pieces 25, and having a flange 26 carrying one of the bearings 30 of the armature, the other bearing 31 being carried by the end-plate 27. The sleeve 20 is adjustable for timing the spark and the distributor and contact-breaker elements are so mounted on it that they maintain a fixed relationship with the adjustable pole-pieces throughout the range of adjustment. The armature shaft 51 is tapered to fit the base-plate 52 of the contact-breaker and carries the distributor rotor 54. The distributor is preferably of the jumpspark type, the stationary members 62 of which are mounted in the end cover 27. A window 65 permits the electrodes to be inspected. The contact-breaker construction is shown in Fig. 3 and is adapted for use in either direction of rotation ; the bell-crank lever 76 is reversible and co-operates with a fixed contact 79 mounted on one or other limb 72 of a Y-shaped extension of the block connected to the primary winding. Fig. 11 shows a modification in which the distributor terminals 63 of the construction shown in Fig. 1 are replaced by pointed screws 115; the cover 92 and the annular distributor member 112 are preferably formed as a single moulding, as shown by broken lines. Fig. 6 shows an armature core which is arranged to give four sparks for each revolution and is formed of I-shaped laminations twisted so as to form pole-pieces 41 and secured between lugs 101 formed on a condenser housing 103 and an end plate 104. Modifications are also described for giving two and six sparks for each revolution. The armature core is provided with insulation 100, 106 preferably forming a spool for the windings.
