Abstract

183,826. Schwarzenauer, W., and Cornehl, K. July 26, 1921, [Convention date]. Tidal energy, utilizing.-In installations of the kind in which air compressors of the trompe type are operated by tidal power and utilized for working compressed-air engines, collecting- basins are separated from the sea by means of dams, within which the air-compressing chambers and passages for the water are formed. The dam, Figs. 1 and 2, is formed with passages e, f, shafts o, u, and chambers s, a. By means of gates k, the passage f is connected with the shaft o and the passage e with the shaft u at high tide, and the passage f with the passage u and the passage e with the passage o at low tide, so that water always enters the chamber s and flows from the chamber a. By way of a vertically adjustable suction head c, water flows through the fall pipe h1, h carrying air with it into the chamber a, where it separates from the water and is compressed and from whence it is led by a pipe l to an air motor &c. In a modification, the pipes o, u, instead of being arranged at the sides of the pipe h, may be arranged in front and behind it and may be provided with siphons so that the chamber a may be entirely cut off from outside water by admitting air to the siphons. In the form shown in Fig. 4, telescopic tubes t1, t2 are arranged on opposite sides of a partition each leading to the compression chamber a and each provided with suction heads c, the position of which is adjusted by means of floats m, n. The tube, the head of which is at the higher level, serves as a full tube to carry air and water to the chamber a, while the other acts to discharge water from the chamber a.
