Abstract
183,423. Ernst, W. E. July 21, 1921, [Convention date]. Safety valves.-The temperature of the circulating fluid in the water-cooling system of an internal-combustion engine is controlled by regulating the rate of flow of the fluid by means of a valve comprising one or more rotary slides or discs co-operating with thermostatic elements of the bimetallic strip type. In the construction shown, two ported discs c<1>, c<2> are rotatably mounted on a spindle k in a casing a and adapted to be rotated in opposite directions by two thermostatic elements d', d<2>, the initial positions of which are adjustable by means of a rotary shaft s and bevel-wheel t<1> engaging a bevel-wheel t<2> attached to the element. The discs c<1>, c<2> are respectively pressed towards each other and against a collar h on the spindle k by a weak spr,ing g acting in the direction of the flow and by a strong spring i acting opposite to the direction of the flow. When excessive pressure arises in the casing the disc c<2> is forced away from the disc c<1> and collar h forming a free passage for the fluid between the discs. The ends m, n of the casing a are tubular to facilitate connection to a pipe line, and a recess is preferably formed in the casing for the reception of a thermometer f.
