Sashes balanced by springs; window-holders.- A hand-operated sliding window is balanced by lever and link k, l, and a spring acting on the spindle h having a squared end engaging the lever k. The spring consists of a flat strip wound into a spiral and secured to a square box at one end and to the spindle at the other end. When the spring is at the required tension, the box g is slid into a holder q and retained by the screw r in one of the holes s. The link l is connected to the window by means of a slot to permit lifting over the fence rail &c. The spring is inoperative when the stop t on the lever k abuts against the link l and when the window is fully opened as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, and hand operation is necessary at those points. Additional securing-means for the window in any position consist of a pressure frame w, a spring x and a bolt 6. The spring bears on the plate z attached to the pressure frame and on the enlarged forked end of the bolt 6, Fig. 14. A rotation of the bolt through a right-angle brings the projections 3 from the recesses in the plate z to the top of the central part 5 and forces the frame against the window, preventing rattling and movement. The windows are guided by pins sliding in grooves in the frame, and in windows of buildings the grooves curve towards the plane of the fixed upper window. A stop u, Fig. 6, is provided on the link l to prevent its rotation past the link k.
