Abstract
181,786. Coleman, A. M. March 12, 1921. Submarine vessels, special apparatus for.-A driving rudder for submarines, submersible vessels, and torpedoes is placed remote from the propellers and comprises two superimposed planes adapted to be turned simultaneously about a common axis, the planes being formed with radially or elliptically curved opposed surfaces and with integral end supporting walls. Two opposed radially or elliptically curved surfaces 1 are supported on a common shaft 2 and are mounted in pairs on opposite sides of the ship. Instead of being overhung, the outer ends may be supported from the hull by a bracket or frame the forward portion of which is knife-edged. The part of the shaft 2 between the two ends of the rudder are given a streamline form. The Provisional Specification also states that the apparatus is applicable to aircraft.
