Abstract
181,713. Gouyaud, G. M., (Assignee of Dalens, L. C.). June 14, 1921, [Convention date]. Arches.-Concrete arched bridges are formed without centering or shuttering by supporting metal tubular sections 1 by temporary ties 17, then filling the sections in succession with concrete through openings 6 in each, and finally encasing the metal tubes with hooped concrete. An aerial ropeway 16 is used in placing the sections, and the bridge platform T is carried by posts 8 also formed of concreted tubular sections. The sections are flanged at the ends and are bolted together with lead washers between, and after final adjustment to the desired arc, the sections are welded together and then filled with concrete. Porous concrete cylinders 20 are placed in the sections, and water may be pumped therein to ensure setting of the concrete, or excess of moisture may be allowed to exude through the walls. Each rib may be built up of two or more tubes joined by cross bracing, and there may be several ribs to each bridge. Bowstring, cantilever, and other bridges may be built in this manner, and the arches may be fixed or hinged.
