Abstract

181,406. Bohrmann, L. H. A. Dec 10. 1920. Spray evaporators.-Liquid is evaporated from a liquid mixture of two or more constituents by spraying the mixture on to or beneath the surface of another liquid maintained at a temperature considerably above the temperature of the mixture, and above the boiling-point of the constituent to be evaporated. The liquid on to or into which the mixture is sprayed must be one with which the mixture is miscible to form a solution or suspension. In an apparatus suitable for concentrating dilute caustic soda solution, the dilute liquor flows from a tank A up a wide pipe C to a device D, by which it is sprayed on to the surface of hot concentrated caustic soda solution b in a tank E. The solution b is heated by a steam coil G and is kept in motion by a stirrer H. Steam passes away by a pipe J, thus preheating the dilute solution flowing up the pipe C. Concentrated caustic soda solution passes away continuously by a pipe O, also arranged to preheat the incoming dilute solution. Saline solutions may be sprayed on to hot oil, and the crystallized salt collected from the bottom of the tank E. Dilute sulphuric acid may be con centrated by spraying it on to hot concentrated sulphuric acid.
