Abstract

180,049. Stone & Co., Ltd., J., and Darker, A. H. Feb. 17, 1921. Electromagnetic switches.-In train-lighting and similar installations, electromagnetic switches for turning on and off groups of lamps &c. at different points of the train by means of a master switch at one point are actuated as shown in Fig. 1 by three windings A, B, C connected between two positive train wires a, b and one negative train wire d so as to be under the control of a master switch c, current being furnished by batteries f, f<1> charged by generators e, and groups of lamps, ventilators, &c. g, g<1>, h, being connected to the main contacts of the electromagnetic switches. The single switch shown on the righthand side of the Figure is closed by the energization of a winding B when the master switch is momentarily set on its contact c<3>. The lifting of the solenoid core j, in addition to completing the lamp circuits, also puts in a hold-on winding C, which remains energized when the master switch is released. To open the electromagnetic switch, the third winding A, oppositely wound to the others, is energized bv setting the master switch on its contact c<2>. Instead of throwing in a third winding, the first winding B may be reversely connected. In the duplex construction shown on the left-hand side of the Figure, each electromagnetic switch acts individually to turn on and off lamps &c. in the same manner as the single switch, and the two are further arranged to act in combination so that when the master switch is set on contacts c<2> and c<3> simultaneously, only one group of lamps &c. is turned on. In modifications of the duplex construction the arrangement of the three windings of one switch is varied, or a two-winding arrangement is used instead. The switches may also be provided with sliding bars and handles for manual operation. Specification 26187/05 is referred to.
