Abstract

179,319. Winter, G., and Winter, R. Feb. 5, 1921. Plug couplings combined with electric switches. A socket for a plug switch is rotatably mounted, on a base by means of a screwed spindle. A spring, attached to the socket, engages a locking-member fastened to the base to prevent rotation of the socket until the plug has been inserted. The plug has two pins for making contact and also a locking-pin which, when the plug is inserted, pushes back the spring on the socket out of engagement with the locking- member and, on rotation of the plug and socket to close the circuit, a slot in this pin engages with the locking-member to prevent withdrawal of the plug. Figs, 5 and 7 illustrate the action of the spring 8 attached to the socket 5. The plug-pins 4 are inserted in holes 11 and the locking-pin 2 in the hole 10. The base 9 carries the contacts 12 and the locking-member 13. The movable contacts are connected to 11. Fig. 7 shews the coupling with the plug 1 inserted and the spring 8 pushed out of engagement with locking-member 13 by the locking-pin 2 on the plug. As the plug is rotated to close the switch, the slot 3 in the pin 2 engages the locking- member 13 to prevent withdrawal of the plug with the circuit closed. The spring 8 may be straight instead of curved and the member 13 may be provided with two or more downwardly depending members engaging two or more slots 3 in the pin 2. The pin 2 may be formed with a foot at right-angles to it such that, on depression of the spring 8, the foot engages the rear edge of member 13.
