109,842. Scott, J. Sept. 27, 1916. Plug couplings combined with electric switches. A singie-pin plug has two peripheral contacts to engage with two contacts in the socket and switch box, one or both of these box contacts being connected to the mains through a switch; the plug is held in one or other of two axial positions in the socket, and in one position it closes the switch in opposition to a spring and in the other position it permits the spring to open the switch. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, contacts P, R upon the plug engage with contacts c<3>, b<5> in the box, the contact b<5> being carried by the spring-controlled switch arm B which is operated by the plug to close the circuit at the contact b<1>. The contacts c<1> are secured bv screws c<3> to a part c<5> on a base C and extend through openings c<7> in a sleeve c<4> into engagement with the plug contact P. The plug is retained in its two positions by the engagement of a pin h<4> with either notch g<2> or notch g<3> in slot g<1>, or the plug may be completely removed and the socket closed by a cap g<4>. In a modification, the parts R, b<5> are not conductors, but the plug is provided with a second contact similar to the contact P to engage with fixed spring contacts in the box. The slot g<1> may be of cam or helical form, and may be provided on the plug to engage with a pin on the socket. An earthed main may be permanently connected to the contacts c<1>; or, it desired, a double-pole switch arranged to connect one main to the contacts b<1> and the other to the contacts c<1> may be fitted.
