Description

PM L. TEMPLE.
ELECTRIC SWITCH.
AIPLIGATION 31mm 00124, 1911.

WITNESSES: I INVENTOR [2 4295 1,") Mb fwd, a? Q BY W TTOR/VEYS unwrap srnrps i nnfr onuicn.
FEEDERIG LANDON TEMPLE, OF CEDAR GROVE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNGB TO THE BRYANT ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF BBIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION 0F CONNECTICUT.
ELECTRIC SWITGH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnonnrc Lennon TEMPLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at Cedar Grove in the county of Essex and State of New ersey, have invented a certain new and imroved Electric Switch, of which-the folowing is a specification.
My invention relates to electric switches, and particularly to double ole switches, the object of my invention being to rovide a device of this character suitable lor certain types of lighting systems and other uses in which it. is desired to not only employ a relatively heavy current but also to maintain one branch of the circuit closed while the switch is open.
in the accompanying drawings in which my invention is exemplified, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a rotary snap switch; Fig. 2 is a plan of one of the switch contacts; and Fig. 3 is a diagram of a lighting circuit in which a switch of this character ma be advantageously employed.
n a lighting system of the character described in my copending application Serial No. 646,461, the various switch sockets are controlled independent of the socket switch, from a remote switch in the manner therein described. Where a number of lights are to be thus controlled a sin'gle pole switch must be inconveniently-large to carry safely the necessary current, or a double pole switch must be employed. Inasmuch as double pole switches as now constructed, break both branches of the circuitin the off position, these are not available in a system of this character in which one of the branches of the circuit passing throu h the switch must be com leted in the 0%? position of the switch. 1y new switch acomplishes this result. In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, which is applicable to double pole switches of all types, I have shown a rotary snap switch with usual insulating base 10 upon which are mounted the terminals 11 and 12 for line wire'A and terminals 13 and 14 for line with their respective pairs of switch terminals 18-19 and 20-21.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented as. an, acre.
Application filed GOtObtT 24, 1911. serial H0. 656,356.
In order to maintain the circuit through the line wire A while the switch is in the ofi' position, the switch contact 17 is provided with two pairs of arms, ab, c-d, one or the other of which will engage the switch terminals 20-21 when the contact 16 is out of engagement with the switch terminals 1819.
It will readily be understood that upon the rotation of the switch spindle 15 by the handle 22, the switch circuit is placed in "011 or off position depending wholly upon the position of the contact arm 16, since in all positions of rest the switch contact 17 connects the terminals 2021 and keeps the line connection through this branch intact. Consequently in the .off position of the switch, the lamps a: may be still controlled through their switches :23. while in the on position the lamps are put in circuit through the remote switch. Obviously the invention is, not limited to the particular type of double pole switch illustrated, nor is its utility confined to the particular system of wiring described.
I c aim as my invention 1. in a double pole switch, two pairs of line terminals for the respective lines. a double pole double break switch mechanism coiiperating with said terminals and compris; ing two contact members, one of which has means for connecting one pair of terminals in both on and off position of the switch mechanism and the other contact having means for connecting the other pair ofterminals in the on position of the switch mechanism only.
2. A double pole switch having a double make and break switch mechanism, a twoarm switch bar for closing one pair of poles in only one position of the switch and a four-arm switch bar for closing the other pair of poles in all positions of the switch, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FEEDER-1C LANDON TEMPLE.
