Abstract
143,599. Crabtree, J. A. Feb. 20, 1919. Plug couplings combined with electric switches. In a switch-plug of the kind in which the withdrawal of the plug automatically opens the switch, this movement also automatically locks the switch in the open position. In the arrangement shown, a plug with an earthing- socket and a tumbler switch are enclosed within a common casing. The switch may be of the kind described in Specifications 140,179 and 140,180, [both in Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.], in which a movement of the operating-lever in one direction actuates the contact-member in the opposite direction. A cam-member 57 is pivoted in proximity to the plug sockets and is connected with the switch-operating member 1 by a link 59 controlled by a spring 61, the connexion to the switch being through a pin 63 engaging the slotted end of the link. The on position of the switch is shown in full lines, and, with the plug in place as shown, the switch can be moved on or off. When the plug is withdrawn, a roller 65 mounted within the bifurcated end of the earthing-plug rocks the cam and link (which together constitute a toggle linkage) and carries the linkage over the dead-centre position. The link 59 moves to the right and carries with it the pin 63 on the switchoperating member, thereby bringing the switch to the off position, in which it is positively locked, since the pin 63 engages the end of the slot and cannot be moved.
