Abstract

178,376. Serste, J. E. Aug. 3, 1921. Adjusting fore-carriages for steering.- Relates to coupling devices of the type in which the forecarriage of the trailer is steered from the tractor. The toothed segment 18, Fig. 1, concentric with pivot 21 of the fore-carriage 22 and connected thereto through a pivot 35 held adjustably in socket 24 by pins 39, gears into pinion 12 which is keyed on a. revolving sleeve 11 on the shaft 2 which is carried by a stirrup 3 connected rigidly to the chassis of the tractor. In the box 5, Fig. 2, which is pivoted on shaft 2 and adjusted by collars 6 and 7, are mounted two pairs of rollers 16 guiding the segment 18. In order to rotate the segments about the pivot of the fore-carriage of the trailer and thus vary the direction of the latter, the pinion 12 is actuated by the operating rod 31 through bevel-gearing engaged by the outer pinion 13 which is rigidly connected to the sleeve 11.
