Abstract

177,967. Nasmith, J. W. March 7,1921. Combing machines. -In a cotton-combing machine provided with a feed-device of the kind described in Specification 138,958 means is provided to couple each feed-roller in the machine to a common rock shaft and to limit and to vary the extent of the oscillation of the shaft and thereby to provide and to adjust the extent of the movement of the feed-rollers on the nipper plates. Means is also provided to adjust simultaneously the position of the feedrollers on the nipper plates without affecting the amount of the feed. In a machine of the kind described in Specification 132,987, the feed-roller F is carried in bearings 30 adjustable along a rod 31 which is connected to a bell-crank lever L pivoted on the pin 16 connecting the operating link 17 to the nipper frame N2. The lever L is connected to a rock shaft T3 carrying a lever 36 on the boss of which is mounted a plate 37 with ears 38, 41, the latter carrying a screw s, adapted as the plate rocks with the shaft T3 to contact with a fixed piece 39. The lever and plate are adjustably connected by a bolt 43 passing through a slot 42. As the nipper frame rocks on its pivot N, the shaft T3 is rocked until the ear 38 or the screw s contacts with the stop 39. The continued movement of the nipper frame then causes the feed-roller to move along the nipper plate P2. Adjustment of the screw s varies the extent of this movement. Adjustment of the plate 37 relatively to the lever 36 varies the position of the feed-roller on the nipper plate. The feed-roller is pressed on to the plate P2 by a spring lever 45. A ratchet arrangement is provided as described in Specification 138,958 to prevent rotation of the feed roller as it is moved forward over the nipper plate during its feeding action.
