Abstract

175,863. Mettler, H. W. Jan. 6, 1921. Folding longitudinally and transversely; measuring.-Fabric is folded to form bundles ready for bleaching by first creasing it irregularly in a longitudinal direction by passage through a guide 31, Fig. 1, having a cylindrical opening and then folding the creased fabric transversely into equal folds over an arm A, as shown in Fig. 5, by passing the fabric between feed-rollers 27, 23 carried by a casing 1, which is moved intermittently from one side to the other of a fixed frame 6. A rope laid on the arm A is slung round the folds to form a bundle ready for bleaching &c. The rollers are rotated when the casing is at rest in its extreme positions, the roller 23 being intermittently rotated by means of chain gearing 18, Figs. 1 and 3, and toothed gearing including segments 13, 14 from a shaft 2, whilst the roller 27 is pressed by a spring into contact with the roller 23. Interchangeable toothed segments on a disc 12 driven from the shaft 2 alternately engage gears 45, 55 connected by chain gearing &c. with a pinion 48 carried by a shaft on the casing 1 and engaging an adjustable rack 51 fixed to the frame 6. whereby the casing is rocked about the shaft 2. A lug 39 on a spring-controlled lever 40, 42 engages in a notch in a disc geared to the shaft from which the roller 23 is driven, the lug being disengaged at times from the notch by means of adjustable dogs 43, 44 striking the arm 42 of the lever 40, 42, whereby the roller may be rotated at times but is prevented from rotating at other times. As the casing oscillates, a shaft thereon actuates a cam 61 and rocks a lever 62, which by means of ratchet mechanism rotates a notched disc provided with a braking-device. After a certain number of oscillations of the casing, a cam-disc 74 removably connected to the notched disc actuates a lever 76 and disengages it from a pin on a spring-controlled lever 83 connected to lever mechanism 85, 88, whereby a spring-controlled clutch arrangement is actuated to stop the machine. When at rest in its extreme positions, the casing rests against adjustable stops 60. The bearings of the feedrollers may be stationary and a reciprocating guide may be used for the fabric.
