Abstract

Sodium pentaborate is obtained by treating a boron ore with nitre cake or the like and sulphuric acid in such quantity that the free sulphuric acid is equivalent to the calcium of the ore and the sodium in the nitre cake or the like together with the sodium in the ore, is sufficient to give a ratio of Na2O to 5B2O3. A small excess of soda above this quantity may be present, but not more than 10 per cent of that theoretically necessary.
