Abstract

175,785. Morgan, G. U., and Clavey, G. A. Dec. 1, 1920. Air and steam pressure sprayers.-In a burner suitable for burning liquid fuel alone or in conjunction with solid fuel and colloidal mixtures, the valve controlling the fuel outlet is formed with a head which may be adjusted to project beyond the fuel nozzle and to cause the fuel to be spread outwardly to meet an inwardly converging stream of the atomizing-agent, or may be retracted within the nozzle so as to allow the consumption of the fuel to be increased to a maximum. Fig. 4 shows a burner comprising a double tubular walled body 10 and a cap 11 which together form a central fuel chamber 12 and an outer atomizing-agent chamber 21. Fuel is admitted to the chamber 12 through an inlet 29 and steam or compressed air to the chamber 21 through a tangential or radial inlet 30. The inner wall of the member 10 carries a nozzle 18 and the outer wall carries an adjustable screwed cap 19 surrounding the nozzle 18. The cap 19 carries an adjustable screwed cap 23 formed with induced air apertures 24. A knob 15 screwing on the cap 11 carries a valve stem 14 which is arranged in the fuel chamber 12 and is formed with a bulbous head 20 which will just pass through the aperture in the nozzle 18. When the burner is to be used as an auxiliary in a furnace fired with solid fuel the head 20 is adjusted so as to project beyond the nozzle aperture, the oil being ejected in a thin expanding sheet which meets the steam or air issuing from the nozzle cap 19 approximately at right-angles. The cap 19 is hollowed out at 22 to approximately parabolic form to provide an expansion chamber for the atomized fuel during its passage to the expanding bore in the induced air cap 23. Where a larger flame is required, as for example when the oil fuel only is used for heating a boiler, the valve is retracted until the head passes within the nozzle 19, much increased oil consumption being thereby obtained. The knob 15 and caps 19, 23 have milled operating rings and are provided wtih graduated flanges 16, 26, 28 reading against marks or scales on the cap 11, body 10, and cap 19 respectively. A by-pass consisting of an aperture 36 normally closed by a screw 35 is provided in the wall of the chamber 12 to allow steam or compressed air to be blown through the nozzle 18 to clear out any obstruction. The nozzle 18 is preferably formed of non- oxidizable steel, while the parts 10, 11 may be of brass. Fig. 6 shows a modified form of burner having a central body part 50 forming the fuel chamber containing the fluted valve stem 51. The outer body part 55 screws on the part 50, the oil and steam or air being admitted from flexible supply pipes 66, 67 through sockets 57, 58. The body parts carry conical caps 59, 60 of non-oxidizable metal and an air-regulating cap 63. A cock 70 is provided in a by-pass below the oil and steam cocks 68, 69 to allow steam to be blown through the oil passages.
