Abstract

Screw propellers. - The blades of a screw propeller have cylindrical surfaces, are wider at the root than at the tip, and are set approximately with a constant angle of incidence from root to tip. The blades have the leading edges A<1> B<1>, A<2> B<2> set at an angle with the shaft, and the extreme tips are formed spoon shape for producing a centripetal component of the flow of the fluid acted upon. The main part of the blade is generated by a straight line moving on a cylindrical surface. The rear edges are contained in planes parallel to the shaft and passing through the points A' or A<2>. The angle of incidence may be made to decrease progressively from root to tip by raising the generatrix at the root end.
