Abstract
173,783. Conley, E. J. Jan. 7, 1921, [Convention date]. Pape; bags and the like, making; materials, special, for bags and Linings.-In a method of and means for packing cigarettes, cigars, coffee, cheese, &c. in metal foil, an enclosure, which may be partly made before filling, is formed of foil <3>/1000 of an inch in thickness. The cigarettes, &c. may be wrapped in ordinary paper and enclosed in a rectangular sheet 1, Fig. 1, of the foil, the edges 2, 3 overlapping and the ends 4, 5 turned down to leave two flaps, a, b, c, d and e, f, g, h, which are then folded as shown. The overlapping edges 2, 3 are fused together by placing the package upon a metal block 6, Fig. 2, with an electrically heated surface 7 not wider than the operlap, and provided with shoulders 8 which partly embrace the ends of the package. The end flaps are sealed on a similarly heated surface sufficiently large to cover the portions of the end where there is more than one thickness of the foil, thereby hermetically sealing the package. The foil may be secured to paper by adhesive before being formed into a package.
