Abstract

497,349. Bags; packages. CHALMERS, J. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. June 17, 1937, Nos. 16865 and 16866. [Classes 94 (i) and 94 (ii)] A package or bag is formed by wrapping an article or former in the blanks shown in Fig. 1. A paper or cellulosic wrapper 7 is placed on a metal foil wrapper 6 so that the edges 9 coincide and the foil wrapper extends beyond the paper wrapper on the other three sides. Projections 8 with weakening slits 18 are formed on the foil wrapper. The composite wrapper is applied in tubular formation about the article, a longitudinal seam 11 being formed with a metal to metal contact, and the article being engaged only by the paper wrapper 7. The overlapping portions of the foil at the ends of the wrapper are adhered together to form closure seams 14 which are moved towards the ends of the article, causing the end portions of the proper wrapper to be folded on to the ends of the article with the edges 1.5, 16 abutting. The seam 14 is now turned down as shown in Fig. 5, so that the tabs 8 project from the edge of the packet and may be used for opening purposes. The portions 17 are folded on the sides of the packet. The closing may be effected by apparatus such as is described in Specification 495,261. The wrappers 6, 7 may be applied independently. A mandrel may be used instead of the article and an open-ended container formed into which the article may be inserted and the open end closed. The packet may be inserted into an open-ended pouch or have a pouch formed about it, a revenue stamp being disposed across the open end between the tabs 8.
