Abstract

173,403. Morgan, F. J. Nov. 23, 1920. Lever-actuated pumps; tappet-actuated pumps; stroke, varying.-The plunger 13 of a pump is packed by fluid in a chamber 10 associated with the outer end of the plunger, the pressure in the chamber being maintained substantially equal to the pressure in the pump barrel throughout the stroke, as by a diaphragm 11 reciprocated in synchronism with the plunger. The chamber 10 is connected to the suction pipe of the pump by a pipe 16 and non-return valve 20. The plunger and diaphragm may be actuated by a tappet 31 engaging an extension 14 of the plunger connected to the diaphragm, and the strokes of the plunger and diaphragm may be varied by means of a sliding wedge between the tappet and the extension 14. The tappet 31 may be actuated by an eccentric or cam and rocking lever 34, and the stroke may be adjusted by means of an adjustable connection between the eccentric-rod and lever.
