Abstract

172,618. Powell, A. L. Dec. 8, 1920, [Convention date]. Driving-gear.-In an engine, mechanism is arranged between the piston and crank-shaft so that the piston stroke exceeds the crank throw. The piston A, Fig. 1, through a pair of rods A' and cranks B oscillates a shaft B<2> carrying a toothed quadrant B<3> in engagement with a toothed connecting-rod actuating the main crank B<7>. Arms B<8> mounted on the shaft B<2> carry a guide-surface B<13>. A modification is described wherein the crank-shaft axis is offset from the cylinder axis. In the construction shown in Fig. 16, the rod B<5> is provided with a yoke guide C engaging a loose collar on the shaft B<2>. In the construction shown in Fig. 21, the cranks Bare oscillated by pins D<2> engaging slots D in a bracket in the pistonrod D'. When used for driving propellers. the engine is geared direct or through toothed reducing gear for high and low power respectively. The driving gear is shown applied to a beam engine and a locomotive.
