Skids.-An emergency brake for road vehicles comprises on one or both sides of the vehicle a skid pan or shoe 1 secured by a lug 4 to an arm 6 pivoted upon the hub cap of the wheel and held normally in the raised position by a cable 14 the free end of which mav be held by a stud fixed to the dashboard. Upon unhitching the cable from the stud the shoe falls and becomes engaged beneath the wheel as shown, the drag being taken by a chain 11 extending from the shoe to a fixed bracket 12. The shoe may be made of sheet-metal having a metal-wearing plate riveted thereto and has lugs 2 to prevent lateral displacement with respect to the wheel.
