Producers.-In a water-gas producer of the kind in which steam is alternately introduced at the top and bottom of the fuel bed, the air-supply pipe, gas discharging pipes, steam-pipes, and damper are controlled by movement of a single lever. The air-supply pipe c, the gas-pipes d, e, and the gas-outlet pipe f terminate in a casing l having a plug valve m operated by a lever n, which is also attached to a controlling-disc having three toothed segments u, v, w engaging valves s, t of the steam-pipes k, i. When the lever n is depressed to the position shown in Fig. 4, a lever q having a pin r engaging with the lever n is depressed, and by means of a rope attachment p the damper o is raised; at the same time the plug m is turned to pass the air from the pipe c to the pipe e at the bottom of the producer, and the fuel is blasted up. By turning the lever n to the position shown in Fig. 5, the lever q is released, allowing the damper to fall, the plug m gives communication between the gas outlet f and the bottom of the producer, and the toothed segment u on the disc has opened the steam-valve s supplying steam to the top of the producer by the pipe i. A further movement of the lever n to the left reverses the flow of steam through the producer. In a modification, the steam-valves may be operated by a cam and roller mechanism.
