To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, ARTHUR G. GLASGOW, a citizen of the United States, residing in London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have lnvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Water-Gas Apparatus, of which the following is a true description, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part hereof.
My invention relates to water gas apparatus and especially to apparatus wherein the gas can be made by the passage of steam either up or down through the fuel bed and has for its main object to provide the apparatus with a pivoted or swing valve which will direct the gas current and which can be swung entirely out of the way of the intensely hot gases flowing from the top of the generator during the blasting.
My invention can best be explained in connection with the accompanyingdrawingwhich shows in side elevation, with certain parts in section, a water'gas apparatus p rovided with my improvement.
A is a generator having passages O O for" gas at its top and bottom respectively; D D are conduits leading from said passages and opening into a common conduit E: the openings old of the gas conduits D D being so arranged that they can be closed by a single swing valve H shown pivoted at 7L2 and operated'by means of a leverh a handle j and rod j; any other means of swinging this valve can obviously be used. The valve is provided with seating faces h h on both sides so that it will conveniently seat on valve seats at the openings (1 and d; as shown, it is closing the opening D and it will be noticed, is completely out of the way of any hot gases coming through the conduit D; when turned to close the conduit D" as'shown in dotted i lines it will be on a level with, if not below the bottom 6 of conduit E and will not be in line with the hot blast or other gases coming through the passage 0.
G is a steam pipe having branches G G opening into the top and bottom of the generator respectively, and g is a valve adapted to direct the steam intoeither of the branches, another valve (not shown) being provided to shut off steam from the pipe G, or admit steam from a suitable boiler to said pipe in the usual way. In order to insure that the steam shall be turned into the top or bottom of the generator, that is above or below theincandescent fuel on the grate a therein in accordance as the valve H is swung to open conduit D or D. I prefer to connect the valve g with the means which I employ for turning the gas valve H so that both valves will be moved at one operation. Any suitable connection can of course be used; I have shown the valve 9 provided with a handle or lever g which is loosely held between the lugs 9' on rod j which actuates valve H.
In operation, the gas valve is turned to open the conduit D, a fire is kindled on the grate a, a suitable blast introduced and a deep bed of incandescent fuel obtained; the blast gases escaping through conduits D, E into the carburetor F. Steam is then turned on from a suitable source of steam into the pipe G, the valve H is turned to open either of the conduits D or D as may be desired, the same operation turning on the steam at the other end of the generator from that from which the open conduit leads; if it is desired to reverse the action of the generator all that is necessary to do is to turn the valve H and consequently the valve g when the gas will be driven from the other end of the generator from that from which it has been taken.
I do not in this application claim broadly a single valve for alternately closing both of the two gas conduits and so arranged that when closing one conduit it will be out of the path of the hot gases issuing'from the other; that being claimed in another application filed by me the 25th day of October, 1893, and serially numbered 489,110.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a water gas apparatus, the combination with a generator having passages for gas at its top and bottom, of conduits D D' leading from said gas passages,'a conduit E into which said conduits D D open, aswingvalve H having seating faces on its front and back and pivoted at b so that when closing either of the openings at cl of the conduits D D it will be out of the path of the hot gases issuing from the other and means for operating the valve.
