Producers.-The blast-supply to a gas-producer used in connection with a regenerative furnace, is cut off during the period of reversal of the furnace by a device brought into operation either by the lever that controls the furnace reversal or by increase of pressure in the producer itself. The steam-pipe 7 of the producer A has a valve 8 operated through levers 9, 10 by a diaphragm 5 in a chamber 6. A pipe 13 connects the space under the diaphragm by pipes 15, 16 with the gas outlet pipe B, the pipe 15 having a throttle valve 46. Air under pressure is supplied by a pipe 17 having a throttle valve at 19 to allow air to pass to the pipe 15 and maintains an air " piston " between the gas outlet B and the pipe 13 to prevent deposits, of tar and other impurities, and a branch 32 leads to a controller which is connected by pipes 44, 49 to the pipe 15 on each side of the throttle valve 46. The controller, Fig. 2, has chambers 23, 24 separated by a partition having a valve 26 operated by an armature 42 influenced by a coil 35 having connections 36, 38 with a lever D controlling the reversal valve of the furnace C. The chambers 23, 24 are connected by pipes 44, 32 respectively with the pipes 15, 17, and an upper chamber 48 closed by a relief valve 47 is connected by a pipe 49 with the pipe 15. On reversal of the furnace valve the circuit is closed, opening the valve 26 and allowing air under pressure to raise the diaphragm 5, which closes the steam-valve 8 and cuts off the blast supply to the producer until reversal is completed and the circuit broken. If undue pressure occurs in the gas-outlet pipe B, this is communicated by pipes 16, 15 to the chamber 48, the valve 47 opening to allow this pressure to cause the diaphragm 5 to be raised, cutting off the blast supply in the manner above described until the pressure in the gas-outlet pipe becomes normal.
