Abstract
794,054. Gas manufacture. POWER-GAS CORPORATION, Ltd. Aug. 9, 1956 [Aug. 24, 1955], No. 24312/55. Class 55(1). In the making of water-gas, the purge between the blow and the run is effected by steam which is supplied at a rate substantially greater than the rate of supply for the run, some, at least, of the purge steam being passed through the incandescent fuel bed. The rate of supply of purge steam is at least 1.25 times the rate of supply of run steam. As shown, the plant comprises a generator 1, a carburetter 2, a superheater 3, and a wash-box 13. Air for the blow is admitted by valve 8, and the steam supply 9 communicates through valves 10, 11, 12 with the bottom of the generator for the up-run, and through valves 10, 11, 18 with the top of the superheater for the down-run, a three-way valve 14, preferably interconnected with the threeway valve 11, controlling the flow of up or down run gas to the wash-box. In one arrangement, the blow-purge steam is supplied through the valve 12 which is interconnected by means 19 with the stack valve 5, so that when the valve 5 is closed, the valve 12 is open only to the extent required for up-run steam, but when the valve 5 is open, the valve 12 is fully open for the supply of purge steam. In another arrangement, the valve 12 is by-passed by pipes 20, 21 and valve 12a, the latter being interconnected by the means 19 with the stack valve so that the valves are either both closed or both open. In this case, the valve 12 is set permanently to pass the up-run steam only, which is augmented during the purge by the by-passed steam. Some of the purge steam may be admitted to the top of the generator through the pipe 22, or to the top of the carburetter, the pipe 21 being omitted. If a carburetter is not provided, the stack and its valve 5 may be at the top of the generator 1. Specification 561,124 is referred to.
