Abstract

170,019. Johnston, D. D., Yeakley, M. A., Goggin, T. E., and Stambaugh, S. F. April 1, 1920. Driving-gear.-Engines with cylinders parallel to a central shaft 23 drive through swash-plate mechanism comprising an inclined disc 28, a ring 23' mounted upon the disc and connected by arms 63 to the pistons, and a second ring 68 mounted to turn about an axis at right-angles to the shaft 23. Projecting into the ring 68 are the ends 65 of the arms 63, and rods 16 arranged diametrically opposite the arms 63. The wobbling ring 23<1> carries a pair ofr balance weights (not shown), and additional balance weights 38, 30 are mounted at opposite ends of the shaft. A modified construction is described in which cylinders are mounted on both sides of a centrallydisposed swash-plate, the balance weights being mounted one at each end of the engine. Modified means for balancing an engine having cylinders arranged as in Fig. 1 are described. They comprise (1) unequal balance weights mounted upon the driving shaft at different distances from the point of intersection of the axis of the shaft and the plane of the swashplate, a line joining the centres of gravity of the weight passing through the point of intersection, and (2) a construction of balance weights as in (1) but in which a line joining the centres of gravity of the weights do not pass through the point of intersection of the shaft axis and the plane of the swash-plate.
