Abstract
168,557. Morison, D. B. March 1, 1920. Purifying liquids; separating by gravity: filters with loose filtering - materials; filters having sheet filtering - materials. - Apparatus for separating a liquid or scum from a heavier liquid comprises a container 11<b> provided with a central upstanding outlet pipe 11<d> covered by a hood 11<e> which has an outlet 11<g> for air and is open at the bottom, the whole device being removable so that the retained light material can be poured away. Fig. 1 shows the device applied for retaining oil in apparatus for purifying feed-water. Containers 11<b> are placed above filtering- buckets 9 in separate compartments of a frame 2 in a tank 1. Water from the main condenser mixes with hot drainage water from auxiliary engines, - steam oil separators &c. in a chamber 3. Its flow to the compartments of the frame is controlled by valves 6<a> and it enters the vessels 11<b> through slots 11<c>. Oil is retained in the vessels 11<b> and water passes through the pipes 11<d>, the buckets 9, and a final filter bag 15 which surrounds the buckets. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the liquid is delivered into the oil-retaining vessel through a tube 24 which can be pushed back against a shut-off plate 25 when it is desired to stop the flow. The filtered water collects in the chamber 21. Specifications 26482/10 and 120,442 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
