Abstract
168,039. Franchimont, E., and Cesar, V. Aug. 20, 1920, [Convention date]. Combustion - p r o d u c t plant.-A method of generating high-pressure and high-temperature gases consists in feeding compressed air to a six-stroke-cycle internal-combustion engine, further compressing the air, effecting the combustion of the mixture and partial expansion of the products, expelling a part of the gases for use, and expanding and expelling the residual gases. The gases are expanded only as far as to ensure continuity of working. A further even number of strokes may be atdded, which may be utilized for scavenging the cylinder, for compression of air, or for motive purposes by admission of gas or vapour under pressure. Fig. 8 shows an engine for the purrose, comprising a stepped piston driving a crank-shaft from which valves 1 - - 4 are actuated by cams on a shaft 9 driven at one-third speed through bevel and worm gearing. Atmospheric air is drawn into the annular space c, compressed, and forced towards the' inlet valve 1 of the generating space G. During the first stroke the inlet valve 1 is opened and air admitted at a constant pressure; during the second stroke all the valves are closed and the air in the generating space is compressed by the piston; during the third stroke fuel is introduced through valve 2 and combustion and partial expansion take place; during the fourth stroke the valve 3 is opened and the gases pass out to be utilized; during the fifth stroke all the valves are closed and the gases expand; while at the end of this stroke, valve 4 is opened and during the remainder of this stroke and the sixth stroke the residual gases pass to the atmosphere. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), apparatus is used comprising a series of side-by-side cylinders with pistons connected to a common shaft, to which a dynamo serving also as a motor is connected; the compressed air may be derived from portable reservoirs or a compressor driven by a Diesel engine, or a rotary compressor may be used; additional air may be introduced during the first stroke, and vapour or gas, for example steam from the water jacket of the generator, may be introduced during other strokes. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
