167,944. Cumpston, M. D. L., and Cumpston, C. G., (Representatives of Cumpston, G. R.). July 3, 1920. Striking-plates for latches. -In a modification of the fastening described in Specification 138,777, the latchretaining device is unbalanced and tends to rotate to releasing position, but can be held by means released by raising the latch. An eccentrically weighted disc B<2> pivoted at B to a base-plate C has notches A, b. Also pivoted to the base-plate at f is a pawl F which normally hangs down and engages in the notch A, holding the disc B<2> in position for retaining the pivoted latch G. On lifting the latch to clear the point b<1> of the disc to open the gate, the upper face of the latch displaces the pawl from the notch A and allows the disc to rotate until the face rests against the base-plate, when the notch b is in the inoperative position, as shown by the broken lines in Fig. 1. On closing the gate, the latch G hits the point B' and carries the disc round until the pawl F engages the notch A, retaining the disc in its operative position for holding the latch.
