Abstract
Triphenylmethane dyes, dyeing chromed wool, are obtained by oxidizing a mixture of a methylene di-anilido-o-oxyarylcarboxylic acid of the benzene series with an o-oxyarylcarboxylic acid of the benzene series; substituted o-oxyarylcarboxylic acids may be used and the anilido group may contain in the nucleus substituents such as - NO2, halogen, or - CH3; the products may be sulphonated. In the preparation of the methylene dianilido-o-oxyarylcarboxylic acids, either an anilido-o-oxyarylcarboxylic acid of the benzene series may be condensed with formaldehyde or the o-oxyarylcarboxylic acid may be condensed with formaldehyde and the product anilidated. In examples, (1) anilidosalicylic acid is condensed with paraformaldehyde in sulphuric acid, and salicylic acid added and oxidized by addition of sodium nitrite to a red dyestuff which may be sulphonated; (2) methylene disalicylic acid is treated with aniline and phosphorus trichloride in benzene suspension and the product treated as in (1); (3) anilido-o-cresotinic acid is condensed with formaldehyde and oxidized together with o-cresotinic acid, yielding a dyestuff giving bluish-red shades when dyed on wool or printed on cotton with a chrome mordant; (4) p-nitranilido-salicylic acid is condensed with paraformaldehyde and oxidized together with salicylic acid, yielding a dyestuff dyeing chromed wool yellowish-red shades.
