Abstract

166,149. Newton, H. Aug. 30, 1916. Ordnance, muzzle-loading; design; pneumatic; chambers. - Relates to trench mortars and the like, and consists in placing the propelling- charge in a restricted combustion chamber from which the gases are emitted through one or more ports, the area of which is adjustable. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the combustion chamber i has ports l adjustable in size. A baffle-plate n may be provided to prevent the gases from impinging directly on to the projectile. The charge is ignited by percussion mechanism m of rifle type. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, a longitudinal combustion chamber is provided with an outlet o, the charge being ignited at the outlet by a nozzle p through which the lighting- agent may be conducted. The lighting-charge may be carried on the projectile, or a simple trigger action may be arranged to effect the firing when the shell has reached a predetermined position in the bore. The combustion chamber may be formed in the base of the projectile instead of in the mortar. The mortar has an hemispherical end b fitting in a socket c of steel or aluminium and is trained and elevated by three guys and stretching-screws d. A stud f moves in a guide g to ensure uniform movement. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 125,475.
