To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON ABRAHAM, of the town of Weston, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fire arms (covered by my application Ser. No. 29,810, dated May 22nd, 1915) and the object of the present invention is to devise means for insurin'gthat each succeeding cartridge is fired by the back fire of the preceding cartridge and thus prevent any of the cartridges missing and it con-ists essentially of a barrel block and a co-acting breech block having recesses into which the bases of the cartridge fit, a continuous groove or channel extending diametrically through each recess, and a deflector extending from the base' of the recess across the groove and into the ignition chamber of they cartridge which would be left free or clear of any primer, the parts being arranged and constructed as hereinafter more particularly explained.

1 indicates the barrel block provided with- .a series of barrel bore portions 2.
3 indicates the hammer. 4 indicates a plate provided with barrel bore portions 5 arranged .in the plate so as to be located opposite each of the barrel bore portions 2 of the barrel block 1.
6 indicates the breech block comprising the body portion 7 forming the back of the breech block and having recesses 8 to receive the large ends of the cartridges and an end wall 9 forming a closure forone-end of the channel-way.
- 10 indicates a groove or channel-way 1 is a plan section of the weapon first cartridge will be formed in the inner face of the breech block 6.
11 indicates a percussion cap chamber formed partially in the barrel block 1 and breech block 6 and partially in the body of the pistol, the outer end of the percussion cap chamber being open and formed in the usual Way to allow of the striking of the hammer against the cap and into which the left hand end of the grooved portion 10 is connected.
12 indicates the percussion cap which fits into the percussion cap chamber in the usual way. p
13 indicates a cartridge with back portion 1 1 fitting into the recess 8 and havingthe free ignition chamber 15.
16 indicates a deflecting member having the cylindrical portion 17 extending into a recess, in the breech block 6 and having a substantially flat V-shaped reduced portion 18 entering into the ignition chamber 15 of the cartridge.
As an alternative construction the projecting portion '18 may be made integral with the breech block 6. 1
Having described the principal parts involved in my invention I,will briefly describe the operation of the same,
' When it is desired to fire the weapon, the trigger 3 is pulled so that the hammer ignites the cap 12, the grooved portion 10, strikes the extending portion 18 of the deflecting member igniting the first cartridge. The back fire of the divided by the substantially :V-shaped extending portion 18, part going back toward the hammer and being lost, while the rest travels along the channel-way 10 to the next cartridge firing it and so on, each preceding cartridge firing the next succeeding one. Hence it will be seen that I have devised very simple means whereby by the ignition of a single percussion cap by ,any suitable firing means each succeeding cartridge is fired by the back fire of the preceding cartridge.
- What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a weapon of the class described, the combination -with "the barrel block, of a breech block having recesses to receive the the flash of which passes up bases of cartridges provided with free 'igniflash to fire one cartridge through its lgnition chamber, and means for directing the back flash of each preceding fired cartridge into the ignition chamber of'the next succeedi ng cartridge and through the firing perforation thereof.
2. In a weapon of the class described, the combination with the barrel block, of a breech block having recesses to receive the bases of cartridges provided with free ig nition chambers and the usual firing perforation, and a groove communicating with each cartridge ignition chamber, means. for
creating an initial flash at one end of the groove for firing the first cartridge, and means for directing the back flash of each preceding cartridge into the ignition chamber of the next succeeding cartridge and through the firing perforation thereof.
3. In a weapon of the class described, the combination with the barrel block, of a breech block having recesses to receive the bases of cartridges provided with free ignition chambers and the usual firing perforation, and a groove intercommunicating between the ignition chambers of all the car tridges, and deflectors extending across the groove into and diametrically across the ignition chamber of each cartridge and firing perforation thereof.
--4. In a weapon of the class described, the combination with the barrel block, of a breech block having' recesses to receive the bases of cartridges provided with freeignition chambers and the usual firing perforation, and a groove intercommunicating between the ignition chambers of all the car:
tridges, and flat substantially V-shaped deflectors extending across the groove into and diametrically across the ignition chamber of each cartridge and firing perforation thereof.
5. Ina weapon of the class described, a breech block in which the bases of a plurality of cartridges are adapted to be located, said block having a firing groove, and a deflector interposed in the length of the firing groove opposite the base of each cartridge adapted-to divide the backl flash from each cartridge. 6. In a Weapon of the class described, a breech block having a firing groove, a plurality of free ignition chamber cartridges whose bases are adapted to be located in said block, a deflector interposed in the length of the firing groove opposite the base of each cartridge and extending into the ignition chamber thereof adapted to divide the back flash from each cartridge.
7. In a weapon of the class described, a breech block in which the bases of a plurality of cartridges are adapted to be located, said block having firing groove and a rounded knife-edged deflector interposed in the length of the firing groove opposite the base of each cartridge adapted to divide the back flash from each cartridge.
