Abstract
166,162. Newton, H. April 28, 1917. Ordnance, muzzle-loading; smoke and gases, deflecting or disposing of.-Relates to muzzleloading trench mortars and like guns of the kind in which the projectile, carrying its propelling- charge, drops down the barrel and is fired bv impact with a fixed firing- pin. According to the invention, means are provided for facilitating the descent of the projectile in the barrel when the gun is to be fired at low angles of elevation, such means being operated either by a vacuum or by electricity. In the construction shown, the barrel a is connected by a passage b to a vacuum which by its suction draws the projectile into the barrel and also has a scavenging action. The firing- stud k is formed on a valve i which is normally open but which closes the passage b when the projectile strikes the stud, the valve afterwards being maintained closed by the gas pressure. In a modification, the vacuum is cut off bv the pressure caused by the firing of the propellant. Specification 166,149 is referred to.
