Abstract

165,994. Crowther, H. L., and Mc- Dougald, L. A.. Airey, H. Morris-, and Irving, G. A. April 27, 1920. Modulating systems and apparatus.-In a transmission system, the power valve is (a) continuously excited by a separate high-frequency source, and (b) the potential of the grid of the power valve is varied at audible frequency by means of a microphone for telephony, or by a low-frequency oscillating valve or other source for telegraphy. As shown in Fig. 1, the plate of the power valve 6 is fed from a high-tension supply 8, whilst the grid is coupled at 11 to a separate oscillating- valve circuit 10. The audible signal frequency is superposed on the grid circuit by a microphone 12 which is coupled at 13 to the grid-filament circuit of valve 14, the anode-filament circuit of which constitutes the grid leak-resistance of the power valve 6. In alternative forms, the audible signal frequency is superposed on the grid of the power valve either by inserting the microphone transformer directly in the grid circuit of the power valve, or by placing the microphone transformer in the grid circuit of an auxiliary valve, such as 14, Fig. 1, and coupling the plate circuit of this valve directly to the grid circuit of the power valve.
