Crushers with vibrating jaws.-In a crushing- machine in which the movable jaw is mounted on a pivot at its lower end, the eccentric shaft for operating the pitman that operates the toggles is arranged above the toggle-plates, which are spread out by the upward movement of the pitman so that the thrust is transmitted approximately in a direction tangential to the arc of movement of the line on the movable jaw where the forward toggle-plate bears upon it, whilst the tension rod serving to open the movable jaw under spring action passes through a slot in the pitman. As shown, the jaws 1, 9 are made so that the transverse width of the gap between them widens from the top to the bottom so that the ore &c. can spread out laterally as the gap narrows down. The movable jaw 1 carried on a pivot 10 at its lower end has upwardly-projecting lugs 11 carrying the pivot of the tension rod 2 which passes through the slot 18 in the pitman 8. The pitman 8 has long faces 19 at its lower end provided with bearing-surfaces 20 for the ends of the toggle-plates 4, 5. The forward toggle plate 4 is preferably formed in two sections connected together by rivets 29 so as to form a safety-device. The rear stay 12 of the frame, against which the rear toggle 5 bears, is disposed at a lower level than the top of the jaw 1 so that the plates 4, 5 extend in an upward direction toward the jaw 1. The pitman may have strengthening ribs or flanges 23 on its faces, and preferably widens from its upper to its lower end. Instead of a single wide pitman 8, a pair of pitmans and two pairs of toggles may be used. Two or more tension rods 2 may be used, or lateral extensions on the movable jaw may be provided with tension or compression springs bearing thereon. In a modification, Fig. 5, the movable jaw 1 has an upwardly-projecting lug 26 with side flanges 27, and the tension rod 2, which is pivotally mounted at its rear end in the rear stay 12, passes through a hole or slot 28 in the lug 26, and carries a buffer spring 3.
