Hair-curling appliances.-In hair-waving tongs of the type having a corrugated middle member movable longitudinally and two parallel outer members arranged to rotate around the middle member about axes parallel therewith as described in Specification 160,384, the rotation takes place before the longitudinal movement of the middle member, and the outer members clamp the hair against a fixed serrated member parallel to the middle member. As the tongs are closed, the outer members 2 forming one limb are caused to rotate on the pins 6 against the action of a spring 4 by the engagement of cams 8 with the projection 9 on the other limb, thus winding the hair round the corrugated member 3 and clamping it against the fixed serrated bar 18 and plate 17, as shown in Fig. 2. Further closing brings the notch 16 on the spring-controlled pivoted lever 15 into contact with the projection 13 on the lever 12, moving the member forwards longitudinally by means of the rod 11. On opening the tongs, the member 3 remains stationary, and, in closing on an adjacent part of the strand of hair, the notch 16 engages the projection 14 on the lever 12, moving the member 3 backwards.
