Carbonizing process and apparatus.-In coking materials which are with difficultv permeated by gas, in vertical retorts, a part of the distillation gases is taken off at the top of the retort and the greater portion is collected from various points in the unheated ends of the vertical walls. The gases evolved from the top of each retort A is withdrawn through openings a to collecting mains b, stand pipes c and main d, and the gases from the lower part of the retorts are withdrawn through pipes e connected to vertical pipes f and main g, the two mains d and g being connected to a common exhausting conduit leading to a byproduct recovery plant.
